Kathmandu (1)

DAY 1: DEPARTURE CITY / KATHMANDU

Arrival in Kathmandu at Tribhuvan International Airport. You are welcomed by your representative and transferred to the hotel.

The Kathmandu Valley covers an area of 360 square kilometres. At an altitude of 1,336 metres above sea level, Kathmandu is a showcase rich in culture, art and exotic, fascinating traditions. The capital, the political, commercial and cultural heart of the country, is surrounded by green hills, terraced fields, glazed-tile roofs and red-brick houses. It is home to many ethnic groups, including the Newar, who gave the city its distinctive cultural character. Legend has it that the valley once lay under water until the day the Bodhisattva Manjushri plunged his sword into the middle of the lake. The valley then drained dry and the first inhabitants began to settle there. The rest of the day is free to relax.

Overnight at the Shambala Hotel.

DAY 2: KATHMANDU DURBAR SQUARE / SWAYAMBHUNATH / PATAN DURBAR SQUARE

Breakfast at the hotel. Explore the city of Kathmandu by rickshaw, weaving through its narrow lanes lined with local shops selling Nepalese spices and souvenirs. The place buzzes with people worshipping the deities as well as vendors selling fruit and vegetables, homemade cakes and tea. Continue with a visit to Swayambhunath, whose name means "Sublime Trees" in Tibetan. This UNESCO-listed site offers a sweeping view over the Kathmandu Valley. The Buddhist stupa holds a special place among both Buddhists and Hindus. This is probably the best spot to witness religious harmony in Nepal. Lunch.

In the afternoon, visit the royal city of Patan, a city of Buddhist monuments, Hindu temples and fine woodcarvings. It is known as a paradise of fine arts. During the visit, meet the renowned healer and singing-bowl master Sudeep Lamsal, who has worked with singing bowls for 38 years and descends from a long line of Tibetan sound healers. Visit his workshop for a demonstration of the power of the healing bowls.

Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Chitwan

DAY 3: KATHMANDU / CHITWAN (189 KM)

Breakfast at the hotel. Drive to Chitwan. Lunch. In the afternoon, take an excursion into Chitwan National Park, Nepal's first national park, established in 1973 and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. Its wildlife includes the great one-horned Asian rhinoceros, gaur, wild bison, sloth bear, spotted leopard and the royal Bengal tiger, among others. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the rich variety of birds.

Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Bandipur

DAY 4: CHITWAN FOREST

Early in the morning, set off on a jungle safari on elephant back, venturing through dense grasslands to observe wildlife in its natural habitat. The elephant grass is thick and grows to a height of 18 to 20 metres. It is a favourite habitat for rhinoceros and other mammals.

Lunch at the Lodge

After breakfast, head to the elephant stables where you will learn about the elephants' fascinating and remarkable habits. Here you may witness a rare sight, the bathing of the elephants. Free time. You can relax around the resort, enjoy a nature walk, or go birdwatching with a naturalist to learn more about the flora and fauna of Chitwan National Park. Canoeing is also available.

Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Pokhara

DAY 5: CHITWAN / POKHARA (150 KM)

Birdwatching

After breakfast, as Chitwan is a paradise for birds and offers a unique experience for every amateur ornithologist, you can take a special birdwatching outing. If you were not able to enjoy the elephant-back safari on the day of arrival, you will have the chance to experience it in the jungle, observing and photographing the wildlife. Alternatively, you may simply choose to walk through the jungle to discover the many birds, plants and animals of the park.

Lunch en route, then continue towards Pokhara. The landscapes we cross are strikingly rich. The Pokhara Valley is one of the most picturesque in the country. Three large lakes dot the site, all three set against the Annapurna range in the Himalaya. This valley lies at 900 metres above sea level. The view of the Annapurna range is second to none.

Overnight at the hotel.

Pokhara1

DAY 6: POKHARA / SARANGKOT / POKHARA

Early in the morning, leave your hotel for Sarangkot to watch the sunrise and enjoy a breathtaking view of the Annapurna massif. Visit Sarangkot hill (weather permitting).

Sarangkot is a small hill famous for its sunrises and stunning views of the Annapurna and Fishtail (Virgin Mountain) ranges. From here you can enjoy a panoramic sweep of the Himalayan peaks, from Dhaulagiri (8,167m) to the pyramid of Machhapuchhare (6,997m) and the rounded summit of Annapurna II (7,937m). Most people come here at dawn or dusk, when the sun bathes the peaks in brilliant colours.

Return to Pokhara for breakfast. In the afternoon, enjoy a boat ride on Phewa Lake.

Free evening, dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Pokhara

DAY 7: POKHARA / KATHMANDU (200 KM)

Breakfast at the restaurant. Return to Kathmandu. Lunch en route. In the afternoon, visit Pashupatinath, a temple dedicated to Shiva. It is regarded as the "Varanasi" of Nepal.

Continue with a visit to Boudhanath. This important Buddhist pilgrimage centre was built in the 5th century and has drawn countless Nepalese and Tibetan pilgrims. The intense religious fervour it radiates is undimmed by the surrounding shops. Its octagonal base is adorned with hundreds of prayer wheels bearing the sacred words "Om Mani Padme Hum". This stupa is known as one of the largest in the world, and the eyes of Buddha painted on its four sides cast an eternal gaze upon people and their deeds. A farewell dinner accompanied by a Nepalese show and dance at a local restaurant. Overnight at the hotel.
